Death Row Red

This is a new beer we customized from an old recipe. It's a Irish Red with a bit more of a red tint to it. It's predecessor was awesome.  This batch was custom brewed for the CJA dept. at SDSU. A friend of mine who is a Proffy there does a class that is a Prison Tour and he is celebrating the 100th trip so we thought it appropriate to brew a commemorative brew called "Death Row Red"! So that is exactly what we did! We used Weyermen Carared instead of the 20L used on the previous batch! I am pleased with the potential color of the brew so far!
Estimated Color
 Procedure:
  • All Grain
  • Single Infusion Mash
  • 90 min. full batch boil
  • Kent Goldings & Fuggle hops
  • OG: 1.060 FG (est): 1.010
  • ABV est: 6.6%
  • Bitterness 25.9IBUs
If the heat behaves itself, we will have a great red here. I will post tasting notes as well as some comments from friends tasting the beer. I will also post the recipe once I figure out how to embed the .xml and .bsm files in this post. In the mean time, our California style steam beer (Anchor clone) is chilling down and will be online tomorrow night to taste. Cheers!

08/01/2011: This beer should be ready around the 20th of August. It's been aging in Beverages4less's walk in cooler due to the heat. Thanks to Freddy who is generous enough to let me keep the keg there. Can't wait to taste this beer!

09/04/2011: Tasting notes: Great color, very clean nose. I could smell a hint of the roasted barley. Very mellow taste. Starts off with a scoatch of caramel then finishes with a slightly bitter bite then a mellow earthy undertone! It had aged about 6 weeks. We tapped this keg at a party and by midnight it was dead. It was great to hear all the positive feedback from everyone including a couple of Europeans that loved it!
We served it up very cold as it was submerged in ice! Almost too cold. It was a warm enough day to let the beer temp (in the glass) climb up to release it's flavors! I was really pleased with it and we are going to brew another batch very soon! If you are looking for a great Irish Red, this is one of our staples and we plan on keeping a batch around most of the time!

Don't for get to check back for new posts and our latest news! In the mean time, Relax... Have a Home Brew! Cheers!

  1. Couldn't agree more with the description of this beer's flavor. Very clean and flavorful. Did a direct taste test with Sam Adams Boston Lager and Death Row Red blew it away! The Sam Adams actually make my face twist up in disapproval! Can't wait for more...would LOVE to see this available all over!

  2. Is there anyway I could purchase a full or pony keg of the Death Row Red? I would love to share the amazing taste with my family at my wedding!

  3. Hi Clarice, Thanks for your interest. Unfortunately, we are not a licensed brewery and do not make production beer for sale. We are just home brewers and love to taste beer and play with recipes! Hopefully one day we will get to that level. Sorry we could not help you out!
